“Plant America for the next 100 years.” That was the theme of the National Garden Clubs’ most recent annual youth contest, with submissions coordinated locally through the Ingomar Garden Club. At its August meeting, members of the Ingomar Garden Club honored a group of local students who won at the state and national level in poetry, sculpture and poster contests.

Winners of the National Garden Club youth contest, which is coordinated annually through the Ingomar Garden Club, line up for a portrait with their certificates Aug. 5. In a world where up-tempo, pass-happy spread offenses have become the norm in professional, college and even high school football, Friday night’s clash between Class 6A No. 4 North Allegheny and Class 5A No. 3 Upper St. Clair felt like a throwback to a simpler time.

PennDOT spokeswoman Nicole Haney said workers had been paving McCully Road as part of a routine group maintenance project when the hole — the width of the road’s two lanes — appeared shortly before 3 p.m.

PennDOT is cautioning drivers to avoid part of McCully Road in Hampton after what the agency deemed a “pavement failure” created an apparent sinkhole on Wednesday afternoon. PennDOT spokeswoman Nicole Haney said workers had been paving McCully Road as part of a routine group maintenance....

Marine veteran Ken Aquiline is co-founder of the nonprofit Semper Fi Mission, which includes mentorship and recovery for veterans as part of its mission. He has met with families of veterans who have died by su***de.

“The families have a saying, they don’t want their son or daughter to die a second death, when their name is no longer said,” he said.

Family and friends of Jerry Ondo don’t want him to die again. And they don’t want anyone else to suffer as they have. Ondo, who served 10 years on submarines in the Navy, was 42 and living in Etna when he died by su***de in March. Rather than hide from

Paul Skenes joined representatives of the Gary Sinise Foundation and Sunbelt Rentals in presenting a $41,266 grant to Berkeley Hills. The money is being used to buy two battery-operated hydraulic rescue tools and spare batteries, which have already been ordered and are expected to arrive in October.

Grants are rare things to get, says Dillon Coleman, chief of the Berkeley Hills Fire Company in Ross. Getting a grant that comes with a barbecue lunch, and Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes serving the chicken quarters, that never happens — or at least it hadn’t before Monday. Skene...

School buildings are an ideal location to prepare and train local police and other emergency personnel, as well as strengthen coordination between organizations. In August, Franklin Park’s police officers worked with the North Allegheny Police and public safety partners for a large training event at Ingomar Middle School.
