Kim Freithaler, who knew Mae Young for close to 20 years, described Young as a prolific plein air artist, an artist who works outdoors. Young painted primarily landscapes in pastels.

A season-ending knee injury proved to be just what the doctor ordered for North Allegheny’s Liam Flaherty.

The Tigers’ two-way standout was unsure of his desire to play football in college, but a torn ACL suffered midway through the 2024 season reinforced his passion for the game.

Nearly 10 months after tearing his left ACL in a noncontact injury against Central Catholic, Flaherty soon will be cleared to resume full football activities as he prepares for his freshman season at Division III John Carroll.

The Tigers’ two-way standout was unsure of his desire to play football in college, but a torn ACL suffered midway through the 2024 season reinforced his passion for the game.

Sometimes the smallest things can have a huge impact — just ask the people whose buildings were nominated for inclusion in the Carnegie Science Center’s Miniature Railroad and Village model.

Nominated this year are Bethel Township High School in Bethel Park, Garards Fort Post Office in Garards Fort and the Andrew Bayne Memorial Library in Bellevue.

Clementine Blackham, a 2-year-old from McCandless, is loving life. She loves her big sister, FinnLee, water balloons and Peppa Pig. She even loves coffee. Most of this sounds like any other toddler. An effort to find abandoned and orphaned oil and gas wells so that they can be plugged will make its way this summer to Ross and Shaler.

Ross and Shaler were chosen in consultation with the state Department of Environmental Protection because they are among six locations in Allegheny and Washington counties with cases of gas coming from unknown sources, said Adam Peltz, director and senior attorney with the non-profit Environmental Defense Fund in New York City.
