FLASH FLOOD WATCH SUNDAY: Remnants of Tropical Storm Marie are going to be moving in tomorrow. The chance for flash flooding is up for central and southern Utah in the green. Pockets of heavy/persistent rain possible.

Fire at the mouth of Weber Canyon right now. I-84 closed both directions. Not great for Labor Day traffic!

EXCESSIVE RAIN RISK SO. UTAH: Really this Labor Day Weekend is looking pretty good - minus the wind and somewhat elevated fire danger. The only day I'd say we need to keep an eye on is Sunday, as some remnant moisture from Tropical Storm Marie works into southern Utah. Level 2/4 risk for excessive rain is in the yellow for southwest Utah. It'd be a good idea to stay out of the slot canyons that day in the southern half of the state. I'll be updating

FALL COLORS STARTING: It's begun. Janice Andrus Noyce found some early pockets of fall color showing up in the Snake Creek area near Midway, UT. This specific location in and around the Midway hills, Wasatch Mountain State Park and Cascade Springs is usually one of the first places to peak in mid to late September.

The color changing process across the Utah mountains will continue until peak fall foliage is achieved in late September - early October.

CALF CREEK FLASH FLOOD: Pretty large flows of 2,500-5,000 cfs on the Escalante River Monday. Video is of Calf Creek as it meets up with the Escalante. Video by Flint Chynoweth, thanks for sending it in.

More monsoon/tropical moisture is possible this weekend in southern Utah.

AUGUST RAINFALL: The monsoon storms really produced last month with many locations running 2x to 3x the normal! Panguitch has a monsoon season total to date (July 13 - Sep 2) of 7.66". As it stands currently, this is their wettest monsoon season on record - potentially since 1904!

CATSTAIR CANYON FLOOD: It seemed harmless when it first started, but by peak flow Catstair Canyon was a deadly torrent on Monday 8/31/26. Nick Smith was there to capture it all at the iconic dry wash near Highway 89 in Kane County, Utah.

The old cars in Catstair Canyon (often called Detroit Riprap) along Highway 89 in Utah were placed there in the 1960s as an unconventional engineering method for erosion control. They literally stacked those cars there to keep the road from eroding away from flash floods just like this one! Wild history!
