Deceased Individual Located in Shasta Lake
On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at approximately 10:39 AM, deputies with the Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit responded to a report that a boater had located a deceased individual in Shasta Lake in a location east of the Salt Creek Inlet. The location is near the area where ongoing search operations have been conducted in an attempt to locate 22-year-old Maxziel Castro, an adult who was reported missing on June 3, 2026. Castro was believed to have been kayaking on the lake and did not return home.
Upon arrival, deputies and CAL FIRE personnel located the body and confirmed the victim was deceased. The adult male victim was recovered from the water.
Since the recovery, the Shasta County Coroner's Office has been working to positively identify the decedent. This decedent is believed to match the description of Maxziel Castro. However, due to the condition of the remains, positive identification has not yet been made. The Coroner's Office is working with the family and the California Department of Justice to confirm the decedent's identity through DNA analysis.
This case remains under investigation.
