Mega Ran

Mega Ran Teacher/Rapper/Hero. Inquiries: [email protected] Retro videogames were the catalyst.

If you put videogames, the '80s, hip-hop, soul music, jazz and standup comedy into a blender and hit "puree," you'd have something close to The Mega Ran Experience. The Penn State graduate and self-proclaimed "Teacher/Rapper/Hero" made waves by by combining 8-bit videogame sounds and hard-hitting hip-hop tracks, and has become a trailblazer in the budding genres of chiptune and nerdcore hip-hop, w

hile maintaining a career as a middle school teacher. Ran's first album "The Call" was a critical success, featuring tracks with some of the underground's most respected heads. Ran cut his teeth in the city of Philadelphia as a moonlighting emcee and producer, performing, freestyle rapping, producing and later engineering at a studio. After relocating to Phoenix, competing in the Scribble Jam emcee battle championships and taking an early exit, Ran almost quit before he was even started, when a creative lightning bolt struck, and a fire was lit. Random began the transformation into Mega Ran, his alter-ego, an ode to the classic video game character Mega Man. After creating a tribute album and receiving an unprecedented level of support and blessing from Capcom to continue, Ran was reborn and became a trailblazer in the budding "nerdcore" and chiptune subgenres, while coining his own term to describe what he had done, "Chip-Hop."

‘Merica. There’s something unintentionally hilarious about growing up with a name like “Raheem,” where people will confidently pronounce “Schwarzenegger,” “Daenerys Targaryen” and every Pokémon correctly, but suddenly look at your name like it’s a super hard math equation.

You spend your whole life hearing remixes of your identity… Ra-ham… Rakeem.. somehow even Ryan. So you write a song about difficult names as a way to laugh through the frustration. A little humor, a little pain.

Then life pulls the fast one: you finally go to Morocco and realize your name isn’t the “complicated” one at all. In fact, it’s probably one of the easiest names in the room.

In America, people act like unfamiliar names are soooooooo hard… but in Morocco and all across Africa, names carry rhythm, lineage, history… even poetry. it’s kinda dope.

I realized the issue was never pronunciation. its a matter of convenience vs respect, as i said in a song once.

And that’s what gives my song “That’s Okay” a deeper meaning now. Originally, the song was kinda like a defense mechanism in a nice way.. But after seeing another part of the world, it transforms into a reminder that there’s NOTHING WRONG with your name, your culture, or your identity.

Sometimes you’re just standing in a place that hasn’t learned the rhythm of it yet. I’ve been ahead of my time before, it’s cool.

So to that I say:
tl;dr: That’s Okay.

Unclassifiable.

Underrated.

Undeniable.

Dropped a 5️⃣0️⃣ piece. 50 million thanks!!!!!!

What makes this milestone special is that it happened without compromising who I am. I never had to stop being weird. I never had to stop talking about the things I loved. I never had to pretend to be somebody else to belong in this space. That’s powerful. And I hope it reminds other independent artists that there is room for authenticity in this world.

Thank you and see you at the next 50!

I sat in a hot spring at a spa today in Fes, Morocco and got so relaxed that I started to cry. I thought to myself “dang I’m so lucky that I get to play the music I like for a living and travel all the way to Africa off my art.” WHAT A LIFE.

Then I thought about all the long nights writing, playing shows for 4 people at 1am, long drives, family gatherings I’ve had to miss, friendships I’ve lost, and so much that I’ve sacrificed to get here.

And I realized I’m not lucky, I’m blessed. But I also work my buns off. I’m so fortunate for your listenership, your friendship and your support that’s gotten me this far. I don’t know what the next step is in this journey but that uncertainty makes me so excited and ready for whatever life has next. You guys make it fun to work hard on it.

Thank you! Keep your shoulders off the mat and your feet off the net.
