Coverage Photography

Coverage Photography A photo-journalistic approach to photography. I was a Combat Photographer in the Marine Corps for five years having served two tours in Iraq.

My military travels have taken me from the tensions of the Middle East, across the rich cultures of Europe, the beaches of North Carolina and the desert sands of Yuma. Throughout I was surrounded by the natural beauty of people’s lives and stillness ambiance of the environment. I frequently struggle with the decision to capture an image or just enjoy the moment. While getting a degree for Multimed

ia Journalism at Northwest Missouri State University, freelancing in the St. Joseph area introduces me to an often disregarded beauty of the Midwest. Having grown up in the Midwest, I lately have seen it for the first time.

Photos from this weekends 39th Annual St. Patrick Day Parade! It was a bit chilly, but the sun did start peeking out towards the end. Classic cars, 2-wheeled posses, candy, bubbles, beer and applause. It was a good way to start the spring season!

Having ran last years Shamrock run, I can say that it's so cool running that last mile down Fredrick with parade crowds lined up on each side cheering you on! Thank God it's down hill so you can look half way cool not completely gasping for air. ha.

1st round of photos from this weekends Shamrock 5k that helped support Special Olympics Missouri North Area.

I was signed up to run this, but the last minute I figured photos would be a nice change of pace (pun not intended). Years ago, before my race years, I always took photos at races like this as well as bike races. The look of glory on people faces as they crossed the finish line was a thing of envy. I forgot how cool it is watching people meet their goals, whether it is a 200 mile bike race, or a 5k fun run. It's the same victory! And that's cool to see.

Awesome job to everyone who ran! It was good seeing you all!

I’m a sucker for Christmas music and the holiday season. For the month of December my Spotify is Christmas all the time! That’s great and all - I’m glad we live in a world of recorded music, but nothing is quite like being surrounded by the body penetrating melody of live music. There’s a purity to it; an organic creation of talent and passion that, reverberating off the walls, makes the listener part of the music. St. Joseph has a professional orchestra that can make happen.

Composed of players from St Joseph and the surrounding area and led by Conductor Christopher Kelts - it does not disappoint. … It does not disappoint.

Last month's “Holiday Cheer” concert had a bit of everything, from Christmas classics such as “Sleigh Ride” and “Carol of the Drum” to the surprisingly included theme music to “Home Alone”! (I didn’t read the line-up before I went... I like being surprised). Add in some Hanukah tunes, Santa Claus and a visit from the St. Joseph Youth Chorale, and you have a perfect Christmas Season date night.

I love going to Kansas City for a nice weekend of entertainment, but don’t discount St. Joseph - For a great evening out a little closer to home, there are a heck of a lot of talented people that make a night of entertainment worth it. The Saint Joseph Symphony in the ridiculous beautiful historic Missouri Theater makes you want to cancel that Spotify subscription… almost. Ha.

Well, Holiday Park still have 4 days for some fresh snow, but if snow isn't the fate of this Christmas season, here is a throw-back to a true winter wonderland in the beautiful midwest!

I really dislike the cold. Desert life is the life for me, I've always said. But there is something peacefully pure about being out in the still elements of nature. I whine and moan whenever I'm about the leave the security of modern climate control. As soon as I'm breathing the winter air though, protected by my coat and neck gaiter, I feel at home. Maybe it's the evolutionary instinct that warms me; giving the idea that existence is more meaningful outside where humanity existed for millennia. Anxiety leaves with the escape of the confines modern living.

These are my thoughts during these 30-second exposures. These photos aren't anywhere near the whole park, but it is definitely a place worth taking a lap before Christmas. Keep an eye out for more. Hats off to the St. Joseph Missouri Parks, Recreation, and Civic Facilities for during an amazing job with the decorations, yet again!

This was 8 years ago this week, and am always proud of the shots I took that day whenever it pops back up on my timeline. Proud of my work that day sure doesn't take away from the tragedy of our amazing downtown area losing another piece of its architectural beauty. 2016 was a bad year for downtown fires. The theme of this collection of photos toggles between the sadness of destruction, and the hard work that the men and women of the local fire departments put in not only in trying to save this building, but in their everyday jobs. It was a chaotic morning that started so peacefully with clear skies and a cup of coffee. You never know what the day will bring.

It was a sad day in downtown Saint Joseph, Missouri this morning. As always on Monday's I drive downtown with my computer to do some work at my favorite coffee shop Paradox Coffee & Theatre. That's when the smoke started billowing on the block next door. I grabbed my camera from my car and forgot about my morning cup of coffee for the moment. The historic Pioneer Building which was 144 years old this year was coughing up smoke. The St. Joseph Fire Department did their best to contain the fire, but the historic Tootle Opera House burned, leaving a hole in downtown and our hearts. (Photos by Patrick P. Evenson)

Hey Chiefs fans! On Saturday Oct 4, at River Bluff Brewing, I will be raffling off these 2 handcrafted framed photos of mine, from the Chiefs Super Bowl Celebrations at Union Station, to raise funds for a Parkway Drinking Fountain Fund. https://givebutter.com/MMMfountain

Our local St. Joseph run group is raising funds for a drinking fountain to be installed along our well used Parkway System. The location and details have been arranged with the City of St. Joseph; all they need now are the appropriate funds.

The photos are 36x12 inch prints, matted in a 40x16 frame that was made from reclaimed wood lath from the walls of a 100 year old house. They're large and pretty!

$3 for 1 ticket
$6 for 2 ticket
$10 for 4 ticket

If you would like to be in the drawing for these and can't make it to River Bluff Brewing on Saturday, just follow the link, or scan the attached QR code to donate the relevant cost for tickets. Message me that you donated and I'll add those ticket(s) to the drawing of the photo of your choice! Due to the size of the photos - it'd work best for those in the KC/St Joe area, where I can easily deliver.

It gets hot on that 12 mile stretch of Parkway - let's make water happen!
