"California bans 70% of tires" has been everywhere the past day or so — but the headline skips the part that matters most for this community. The California Energy Commission's new Replacement Tire Efficiency Program, approved August 18, specifically exempts deep-tread off-road tires, along with snow, competition, and used tires.

The rule phases in starting 2029 and targets fuel efficiency on standard passenger tires, not off-road capability.

Land Rover pulled the cover off the Defender Dakar at The Quail during Monterey Car Week — a limited-run, road-legal version of the D7X-R that won the 2026 Dakar Rally on its very first attempt.

It's not a rally-themed appearance package. The body architecture, transmission, and driveline carry straight over from the race car, along with the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 — now free to hit its full 635PS and 750Nm without Dakar's competition restrictions. Add in 35-inch tires, Bilstein motorsport dampers, and Flight Mode (built to help the truck land smoothly after catching air), and this is about as close as you'll get to owning a race truck with plates.

Worth asking, though: a chassis tuned for flat-out desert speed is a different job than soaking up washboard at 15 mph with a rooftop tent and 300 pounds of gear. We'll be watching for real-world payload numbers once Land Rover releases them.

Toyota has confirmed a factory overland trim for the Tundra: the 2027 Trailhunter, built off the SR5 grade rather than a top-tier trim — a notable positioning choice aimed at a more accessible price point.

Standard equipment includes Michelin LTX Trail tires, an Old Man Emu suspension upgrade, front recovery hooks, underbody protection, and off-road traction tech (Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, locking rear diff) that's typically gated behind TRD Pro.
