It’s a familiar snag: you’re packed up and ready to go after a night of camping, but realize you forgot to charge your bluetooth headset overnight. Lately we’ve been playing around with a little device on our BMW R1300GS that helps a lot in these situations — the OptiMate O-114 dual USB charger. With its fast-charging USB-C port pushing 16.5 Watts, you can get your headset quickly back online for that entertaining riding-buddy banter. Even better, it’s got a second USB port so you can charge your GPS or other devices like your camp headlamp at the same time. The O-114 model plugs straight into the factory BMW, Ducati or Triumph DIN socket and has a 90° bend for better clearance.

The Mojave desert is often defined by the quirky and odd and the B***o Schmidt Tunnel is just one of those oddities with a strange history. William “B***o” Schmidt moved from Rhode Island to California, took a pick, shovel, four-pound hammer, occasionally some dynamite, and started to dig a half-mile long tunnel through solid rock. In 1938, he popped out the far side of the mountain, later deeded the tunnel to a fellow miner and left. Exactly why remains an open question. Regardless, the man spent over three decades inside a mountain carrying roughly 5,800 tons of rock in burlap sacks on his back, in a wheelbarrow, and eventually using a mining car on rails. If you keep going to the end of the 1/2-mile long shaft, you’ll discover a view that makes the creepy hike well worth the journey.
