NEW! Adam Savage visits National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution's Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar for an up-close look at a truly remarkable aircraft: the Sikorsky JRS-1. The only surviving aircraft in the museum’s collection that was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the attack on Dec. 7, 1941, this unarmed twin-engine amphibian flying boat has a truly fascinating story to tell. Aeronautics curator Tom Paone and museum specialist Richard Snell describe the delicate process of preserving the aircraft’s original materials, the many secrets still being uncovered, and the unique challenges of restoring a nearly 90-year-old flying boat. NEW! The machine parts stand that Adam has used in his shop for the past decade is in dire need of a rebuild--it's too wobbly and its wheels are literally falling apart. So to build a new stand for his rotary table and surfacing plates, Adam takes stock of one of his favorite materials to build sturdy shop infrastructure: 1-inch thick utility grade plywood. At the Academy Museum's Debbie Reynolds Conservation Studio, Adam examines an original creature by effects legend Ray Harryhausen! Unlike the stop-motion puppets use for animating these creatures on film, this Rhedosaurus from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a sculpture made of delicate modeling clay. That allows Adam to see the original sculpting work up close, as well as reveal the parts restored by conservators that can only be seen under ultraviolet light! Link in comments.
