The search for the missing newborn baby in Halifax has come to a heartbreaking end after infant remains were discovered in a wooded area off Old Coach Road near Prospect Road at approximately 3:20 p.m.
Police say new information led investigators to the area earlier today. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service will now conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
The 23-year-old woman connected to the investigation remains in critical condition in hospital. Police stated they believe she suffered a medical emergency and do not suspect violence in relation to her condition.
Four individuals known to the woman were taken into custody for questioning on Saturday. Two have since been released, while two others have now been charged.
Sukhpreet Singh, 23, and his wife Ramandeep Kaur, 26, are facing charges of:
• Concealing the body of a child
• Obstruction
• Indignity to a dead body
Both are expected to appear in Halifax provincial court on Monday.
Police say the investigation is still ongoing and extended condolences to the infant’s loved ones.
Halifax Regional Police Chief Don MacLean called the situation “one of the most difficult moments for first responders,” thanking officers and search teams for their efforts throughout the investigation.
