ECW Press

ECW Press Entertainment. Culture. Writing. www.ecwpress.com Welcome to ECW Press! Who are we? But as the company grew and changed, our name, in our minds, also changed.

Publishers Weekly recognized ECW Press as one of the most diversified independent publishers in North America. ECW Press has published close to 1,000 books that are distributed throughout the English-speaking world and translated into dozens of languages. In the next year we’ll release 50 new titles and will continue to support and promote a vibrant backlist that includes poetry and fiction, pop-c

ulture and political analysis, sports books, biography, and travel guides. Books by writers whose names you know and love — and by those who we’re very pleased to introduce for the first time. After three decades, we still get asked about our name, those three little letters: ECW. At first the acronym was self-descriptive: Essays on Canadian Writing (the name of the journal of literary criticism we started in 1974). We’ve heard the company called Essential Canadian Writing, Excellent Contemporary Writing, or, more recently, Extreme Cutting-Edge Writing. And these names have been, and still are, appropriate. But now we realize that each of those letters represents a particular strain of ECW Press’s diverse passions - Entertainment, Culture, Writing. No matter how our name has been interpreted, however, there has always been one constant: our pursuit of excellent writing. Our colophon depicts that commitment to excellence: it illustrates the transformation of basic material into gold. We recognize that it’s our authors who make us what we are, who establish our reputation. And because of this we’re committed to bringing you the best writers and the best writing we know — in every genre. In the next decade, ECW will continue to grow and change. Today, we’re publishing a heady mix of commercial and literary works that strive for a uniform standard of excellence: the best writing; the most exciting, controversial, and insightful takes on the hottest subject matter; groundbreaking design and high production values. Our goal is to support every ECW Press title with the kind of innovative marketing and promotion that give our books and authors the recognition they deserve. Welcome to ECW. ECW PRESS

It Can’t Rain All the Time: The Crow by Alisha Mughal is out today! The latest in our Pop Classics series, it’s a passionate analysis of the ill-fated 1994 film starring the late Brandon Lee and its long-lasting influence on action movies, cinematic grief, and emotional masculinity.

Through her memories of seeking solace in the film during her own grieving period, Alisha brilliantly shows that, for all its gothic sadness, The Crow is, surprisingly and touchingly, a movie about redemption and hope.

“It Can’t Rain All the Time is criticism, history, memoir, and poetry: a work of art about a work of art.” — Matt Zoller Seitz, author of The Wes Anderson Collection

Off Menu by Amy Rosen and Seventhblade by Tonia Laird are out today!

“Written as a series of charming and hilarious diary entries, [Off Menu] is a fantastic blend of Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary, Nora Ephron’s Heartburn, and the humor of Molly Harper, Janet Evanovich, and Emily Henry. Perfect for foodies who love a bit of fun, hijinks, and romance.” — Library Journal, starred review 🍓🫒🍕🥂

“At its core, Seventhblade is a story of a mother’s love, her need for justice, and the discovery of her roots. Drawing on her Indigenous heritage, Tonia Laird weaves the tale of T’Rayles, a half-soul with a mysterious past, set in a world where gods roam freely. Deftly written with intricate worldbuilding and vivid characters, Seventhblade is fantasy at its finest ... and I need a sequel!” — Allison Pang, writer of the Abby Sinclair urban fantasy series 🗡️📚✨

Ugh! As if!: Clueless by Veronica Litt is out today! Part of our Pop Classics series of short books that argue why a particular piece of pop culture matters — and this one is about one of everyone’s favourite movies! 💄📞💖

Veronica argues that this seemingly fluffy teen romp is the quintessential thinking woman’s movie, one in which audiences are asked to seriously consider the beauty and power of femininity and naïveté. Cher Horowitz, our wealthy, gorgeous, and frequently hapless protagonist, embodies the kind of privilege that no one expects to find endearing. Yet her gradual pivot from oblivious it girl to burgeoning activist is a powerful reminder that even the most unlikely people can change for the better and contribute to their communities. Clueless teaches Cher, and us, how to become better.

“Litt’s lively, original Ugh! As If! uses the brilliant teen movie Clueless as a lens to examine the broader cultural landscape with playfulness and depth.” — Emily Nussbaum, Pulitzer Prize winner, author of Cue the Sun!

Mike Mentzer: American Odysseus is out today! The first biography about the legendary bodybuilder who rose to the top of his sport in the ‘70s but who also wrestled with mental illness and sought to revolutionize the industry by arguing that bodybuilders shouldn’t forsake their mental development in favour of developing their bodies.

Drawing upon audio recordings, letters, diary excerpts, as well as interviews with those closest to him, this is the true story of one man who stood up to an entire industry — and paid the ultimate price.
