ECW Press

ECW Press Entertainment. Culture. Writing. www.ecwpress.com Welcome to ECW Press! Who are we? But as the company grew and changed, our name, in our minds, also changed.

Publishers Weekly recognized ECW Press as one of the most diversified independent publishers in North America. ECW Press has published close to 1,000 books that are distributed throughout the English-speaking world and translated into dozens of languages. In the next year we’ll release 50 new titles and will continue to support and promote a vibrant backlist that includes poetry and fiction, pop-c

ulture and political analysis, sports books, biography, and travel guides. Books by writers whose names you know and love — and by those who we’re very pleased to introduce for the first time. After three decades, we still get asked about our name, those three little letters: ECW. At first the acronym was self-descriptive: Essays on Canadian Writing (the name of the journal of literary criticism we started in 1974). We’ve heard the company called Essential Canadian Writing, Excellent Contemporary Writing, or, more recently, Extreme Cutting-Edge Writing. And these names have been, and still are, appropriate. But now we realize that each of those letters represents a particular strain of ECW Press’s diverse passions - Entertainment, Culture, Writing. No matter how our name has been interpreted, however, there has always been one constant: our pursuit of excellent writing. Our colophon depicts that commitment to excellence: it illustrates the transformation of basic material into gold. We recognize that it’s our authors who make us what we are, who establish our reputation. And because of this we’re committed to bringing you the best writers and the best writing we know — in every genre. In the next decade, ECW will continue to grow and change. Today, we’re publishing a heady mix of commercial and literary works that strive for a uniform standard of excellence: the best writing; the most exciting, controversial, and insightful takes on the hottest subject matter; groundbreaking design and high production values. Our goal is to support every ECW Press title with the kind of innovative marketing and promotion that give our books and authors the recognition they deserve. Welcome to ECW. ECW PRESS

Irresistible Force: The Life and Times of Gorilla Monsoon by Brian R. Solomon is out this week!

A crucial figure in the development of what would eventually become the juggernaut known as WWE, Robert “Gino” Marella, better known as Gorilla Monsoon, has never had his whole story told — until now.

“What a monumental achievement this book is. I was fascinated from the first page. Brian Solomon filled in so many blanks for me and also reintroduced many wrestlers I’d long forgotten about. I’ll put it right next to my favorite pro wrestling books ever!” — Bret “Hitman” Hart

Two of our new books out this week are selections on ’s inaugural Booksellers’ List! 📚 Read more about The Witch of Willow Sound and The First Thousand Trees below.

The Witch of Willow Sound by Vanessa F. Penney is a feminist gothic tale with a tough-as-nails female protagonist who must find her elderly aunt, long suspected of being a witch. Inspired by real East Coast traditions and witch lore, it explores family lost and found and throws firelight on dark truths about what societies do with the people, and the past, they don’t want. Foreword Reviews gave it a starred review and called it “A spellbinding debut novel.” ⭐️🐇

The First Thousand Trees by Premee Mohamed is the final instalment in her stunning novella trilogy that began with An Annual Migration of Clouds. While our story is bleaker than ever, it’s still in search of a spark of hope in the climate apocalypse. Library Journal praised the final book and said readers “will want to dive deep into this compelling and chilling series.” ☁️🐦‍⬛🦠

Thank you to all of the indie bookstores who nominated these books for the Booksellers’ List! Swipe through to read some of the lovely things booksellers had to say about them ❤️

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Today and every day we encourage you to reflect on the painful legacy of residential schools and colonization in Canada, support Indigenous businesses and creators, engage in community events, and listen to Indigenous voices. We are grateful to the immensely talented Indigenous authors who share their stories with us, and we have put together a collection of six powerful books that highlight these perspectives and experiences.

Motherness: A Memoir of Generational Autism, Parenthood, and Radical Acceptance by Julie M. Green is out today! A funny, unflinchingly honest, and deeply compassionate memoir about one woman’s experience of raising an autistic child while discovering she is also “on the spectrum.”

———

Almost 10 years after learning that her son is autistic, Julie Green was also diagnosed, shedding light on a lifetime of feeling othered and misunderstood. Motherness traces Julie’s journey from childhood to early motherhood, when she must advocate for her son while navigating her own struggles.

Motherness is a story about accepting your child while learning to accept yourself. This extraordinary, groundbreaking memoir speaks to the great challenges and great joys of autism, providing valuable insights to parents of autistic children, adults newly diagnosed or questioning their place on the spectrum, and anyone seeking a greater understanding of neurodiversity.

Girl Gangs, Zines, and Powerslides: A History of Badass Women Skateboarders by Natalie Porter is out today! 🛹

A vibrant, meticulously researched celebration of the women and non-binary skateboarders who defied a hostile industry and redefined skateboarding around the world.

“A take-everywhere-and-read-it book that is an accomplished and accessible piece of research. Each chapter — which showcases the personal reflections, anecdotes, and backstories of remarkable women — is a banger. All thriller, no filler. Natalie Porter shreds through the grip-taped ceiling, which has often held back or obscured women’s contributions in skateboarding.” —Dr. Indigo Willing, sociologist and lead researcher of Skate, Create, Educate and Regenerate and co-author of Skateboarding, Power and Change

A big congratulations to Kirti Bhadresa, whose book An Astonishment of Stars was longlisted for The Giller Prize!

In this collection of finely wrought short stories, Kirti Bhadresa writes about the often invisible lives of racialized women. Bhadresa is a keen observer of humanity, especially of the BIPOC women whose work is the backbone of late-stage capitalism but whose lives receive so little attention in mainstream culture.
