ECW Press

ECW Press Entertainment. Culture. Writing. www.ecwpress.com Welcome to ECW Press! Who are we? But as the company grew and changed, our name, in our minds, also changed.

Publishers Weekly recognized ECW Press as one of the most diversified independent publishers in North America. ECW Press has published close to 1,000 books that are distributed throughout the English-speaking world and translated into dozens of languages. In the next year we’ll release 50 new titles and will continue to support and promote a vibrant backlist that includes poetry and fiction, pop-c

ulture and political analysis, sports books, biography, and travel guides. Books by writers whose names you know and love — and by those who we’re very pleased to introduce for the first time. After three decades, we still get asked about our name, those three little letters: ECW. At first the acronym was self-descriptive: Essays on Canadian Writing (the name of the journal of literary criticism we started in 1974). We’ve heard the company called Essential Canadian Writing, Excellent Contemporary Writing, or, more recently, Extreme Cutting-Edge Writing. And these names have been, and still are, appropriate. But now we realize that each of those letters represents a particular strain of ECW Press’s diverse passions - Entertainment, Culture, Writing. No matter how our name has been interpreted, however, there has always been one constant: our pursuit of excellent writing. Our colophon depicts that commitment to excellence: it illustrates the transformation of basic material into gold. We recognize that it’s our authors who make us what we are, who establish our reputation. And because of this we’re committed to bringing you the best writers and the best writing we know — in every genre. In the next decade, ECW will continue to grow and change. Today, we’re publishing a heady mix of commercial and literary works that strive for a uniform standard of excellence: the best writing; the most exciting, controversial, and insightful takes on the hottest subject matter; groundbreaking design and high production values. Our goal is to support every ECW Press title with the kind of innovative marketing and promotion that give our books and authors the recognition they deserve. Welcome to ECW. ECW PRESS

Three new books are out today! Which one is going on your TBR list? 📚

The Golden Generation: How Canada Became a Basketball Powerhouse by Oren Weisfeld dives into the untold story of Canadian men’s basketball, from decades of struggle to the resurgence of a new generation of NBA stars that propelled Canada back to international glory. “Essential reading for basketball fans of any country, but especially for fans of Canadian sports history.” — Michael Grange, Sportsnet

The Many Names of Robert Cree: How a First Nations Chief Brought Ancient Wisdom to Big Business and Prosperity to His People by Robert Cree with Therese Greenwood is out today!

“Fort McMurray First Nation chief Cree charts his path from a horrific childhood to a fulfilling life in this moving debut. [His] optimism rings true, even as his blunt account of state-sanctioned abuse haunts. The result is an affecting, hard-won testament to the power of perseverance.” — Publishers Weekly

The Solitary Friend—the 23rd and penultimate installment in Gail Bowen’s beloved Joanne Kilbourn series—is out today! 🐠📖🔍

“A crime that takes place in a Gail Bowen mystery gathers force like a distant storm. And by the time you know what’s going on, you can’t turn away. This is Regina. Everybody knows everybody, and soon you know them too. And you start to care for them, and you hope against hope that everything will turn out well and that your new friends will get through this one too. Over time, these stories reveal a Regina layered with contradictions — sharp, warm, political, funny. The characters don’t just live in this city — they wrestle with it, celebrate it and reflect its depth. That complexity stays with you. The Solitary Friend is a standout story in a standout series.” — Jennifer Brewin, artistic director of Globe Theatre Regina
