NC Leaders Slip Through Barricades, Offer Tributes To July 13 Martyrs

A day after being placed under house arrest, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah along with other National Conference leaders managed to slip through police barricades to offer fateha at the Naqshband Sahib graveyard in Srinagar. The visit was to pay homage to the martyrs of July 13, 1931 — a significant day in Kashmir’s political history.

Speaking to reporters at the site, Abdullah strongly criticized the Lieutenant Governor-led administration and police forces for attempting to prevent them from visiting the graveyard. He called the move unjustified and an insult to those who laid down their lives for justice and dignity.

The video captures the dramatic moments of Omar’s visit, his statement to the media.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Shaheed Mazar in Srinagar to offer Fatiha prayers, but not without resistance. In a bold statement, he condemned the authorities for previously placing him under house arrest and for continuing to obstruct his peaceful visit even today.

He questioned the legality and motive behind these restrictions, stating:

“They think we are their slaves. If we are anyone’s, we are of the people."

Omar highlighted how bunkers were set up within minutes when he earlier expressed his intent to visit. This time, he chose not to inform the administration — and yet, he claims, attempts were made to stop him again.

His remarks raise serious concerns over freedom of movement, democratic rights, and political suppression in Jammu and Kashmir.
