𝐎𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐑𝐘 | 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐚 𝐇𝐚𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐞𝐝

Moahloli Mphaka, a former Government Secretary and advisor to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) passed away last night on his birthday.

Mphaka, who served during the administration of former Prime Minister Thomas Thabane, was a key figure in Lesotho’s public service.

In recent years, he continued to serve the nation as an advisor to the LHWP, contributing to one of Lesotho’s most critical infrastructure projects, until he became an active member of All Basotho Convention.

Details surrounding his death are still emerging. Newsday extends condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

From the rise of the terrifying Kholumolumo to the courage of young Lerato, we saw how unity “kopano ke matla” helped protect the land.

20 Motšoene Road in the Industrial Area of Maseru, Builder’s City hardware is busy with the daily clatter of tools, the hum of forklifts, and the sharp scent of fresh timber.

This is the location listed as the registered office of StarLink Lesotho — the company that the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) announced on Monday had been granted a 10-year licence to operate in the country.

But a visit by the Newsday team on Tuesday, a day after the announcement, revealed no trace of StarLink Lesotho’s presence at the registered address, raising serious legal and regulatory concerns under the Companies Act of 2011.

During the second session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) between Lesotho and South Africa, the two countries signed six Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), marking a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral relations.

The agreements cover a broad range of sectors, including:

1. Cooperation on Water Infrastructure – Establishing a framework for collaboration on the proposed construction of two wells along the Mohokare-Caldon River.

2. Higher Education – Promoting academic collaboration and mobility between institutions in both countries.

3. Basic Education – Enhancing cooperation in early education and primary schooling.

4. Defense Cooperation – Strengthening security ties and defense capabilities.

5. Social Development – Collaborating on programs aimed at improving social welfare.

6. Economic Cooperation – Expanding trade, investment, and economic partnerships.

In addition to these agreements, one of the key highlights of the Commission was the ongoing discussion regarding a proposed 90-day visa-free arrangement. Prime Minister, Ntsokoane Matekane, emphasised the urgency of this agreement, calling for its implementation by 1st May 2025.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa responded by stating that the Department of Home Affairs is currently reviewing the proposal, noting that it is under serious consideration.

The visa arrangement, once finalised, is expected to significantly ease travel between the two nations and boost economic and social ties.
