CULTURES | In the PBB house, it is the deep and husky but god-like voice of Big Brother. It issues tasks, settles disputes, and reminds everyone of the rules. He is the quote-unquote ultimate arbiter of truth.

From 1972 to 1986, that voice belonged to Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The media have been weaponized as his microphone—through television and radio, his declarations were inculcated as laws. He rationalized his totalitarian dictatorship underneath the masquerade of quote-unquote “New Society”. In his rule, dissent was not just rule-breaking; it was a violation of the entire national project, met not with nomination of points, but with arrest, torture, or disappearance.

‎IN PHOTOS | Marking the 53rd anniversary of Martial Law, at least 50,000 civilians flooded Roxas Boulevard to amplify their advocacies against the enduring systemic corruption under the Marcos-Duterte regime. Students and workers alike joined hands in a purposeful march—determined to put an end to the issues that plague Philippine society, from budget cuts to flood control.

‎Despite the scorching heat, the people stood firm in their demand for accountability and decisive action against corrupt officials. With placards and banners held high, they raged against the ₱1.2 trillion stolen from the public and called for the return of these funds for the benefit of the people.

‎Strengthened by joint forces of university students and activist groups, the event was not only a call for change but also a reminder that the spirit of resistance during Martial Law lives on today. It proves that we are still capable of bringing power back to the people.

7:30 AM March to Luneta

IN PHOTOS | UPM University Student Council (USC), College of Arts and Sciences Student Council (CASSC), progressive student organizations and employee unions gathered in front of the CAS Gate yesterday, September 19, for the Black Friday Protest.

The program started with Kabataan Partylist UP Manila Coordinator Alec Miranda calling out the unjust budget cuts affecting 29 state universities, followed by CASSC councilors Jhayzen Tristan Morado and Miel Gabriel Lagdan, who spoke out against campus militarization, lack of free student spaces and basic services, and the presence of the NTF-ELCAC. Student leaders from Agham Youth UPM, NNARA Youth UPM, and KASAMA UPM also called out for land reform, funding for the education and research sector, and a thorough investigation regarding confidential funds.

They were later joined by other UP Manila student councils and organizations as they marched towards the front of UP-PGH Oblation Plaza, where they hung a banner asserting the call for accountability on anomalous corruption in the government. Representatives from UPM USC, All UP Academic Employees Union - Manila Chapter, All UP Workers Union - Manila/PGH Chapter, and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers spoke out regarding contractualization and low salaries of workers, budget cuts in healthcare, the Return Service Agreement, and systemic injustice within public institutions.

The protests ended with a candlelighting ceremony and formation of a human chain in response to the ongoing investigations regarding ghost flood control projects and House budget deliberations, and to commemorate Martial Law victims.
