**** Crafty Mart To Award $2000 to Handmade Business Owner at 2021 Creative Catapult****
-- Crafty Mart, a local nonprofit that serves and empowers artists, makers, and artisans in the greater Akron area, has announced the 2021 Creative Catapult on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Signal Tree Event Space in Bounce Innovation Hub, at 526 S. Main St. in downtown Akron. At Creative Catapult, three local artists will compete for a chance to win a $2,000 grant for their business. Each artist will prepare a pitch and a display of their handmade goods so attendees can review their work and vote for their favorite.

Creative Catapult is part of the Maker Sessions, Crafty Mart’s one-of-a-kind entrepreneurial curriculum for creative small businesses, funded by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation. Every maker who completes the Master Track of the Maker Sessions has the opportunity to participate in Creative Catapult. This year’s Creative Catapult will feature three artists: Black Culture Candles, small-batch, hand-poured candles that honor the culture and legacy of the experiences that unite us and celebrate Black joy through scent; Blue Door Atelier, intuitive art that creates joyful, adventurous experiences for adults and children; and P31 Art & Design LLC, hand-painted canvases and items to build networks that last a lifetime and inspire others to a life of grace and good works.

“These makers have worked so hard to get to this point, and Crafty Mart is thrilled to give them this opportunity to advance their small business,” said Marissa McClellan, Executive Director, Crafty Mart. “After last year’s virtual event, we are so excited to gather in person again and connect our makers with community members who are passionate about supporting entrepreneurship and the arts here in Akron.”

Past winners of Creative Catapult include Dough House Cookies, Broke -N-Bored Concepts, and Julia Belle’s Seasonings. General admission tickets are $50, which includes admission to the event, dinner, and a box with products from each maker. VIP tickets are $75, which includes admission to the event, dinner, a box with products from each maker, champagne, and open bar. Okay, I am just gonna say it..

OUR WORLD IS GOING TO S**T.

When I was growing up, I was taught to love thy neighbor, even if they dont love you. I was raised in a world where racism wasn't a thing, people weren't getting killed left and right, the cops were there to HELP you, drugs were never around, and you could play outside without being afraid that you may never come back.

Now, I am constantly looking over my shoulder, afraid that if something were to happen, calling the police would just make it worse. I dread phone calls about another loved one overdosing, or being shot and killed over absolutely nothing. I'm afraid for not only my life, but every person around me.

I love my crazy biracial family, and I would be devastated if something happened to them. I pray that one day WE come together as one, and put an end to all of this violence.
Today we celebrate Chris Miller, our communications and community investment officer, for the decade of service he has provided to Akron Community Foundation. In his role, Chris provides vital services to both our marketing and community investment office and acts as a key storyteller for the nonprofits in our community, as well as the generous donors who give to them. You can see his work in our magazine The Signal, on our website, in many of our videos that he also shoots and produces, and throughout our various social media channels. Chris is the go-to staff member when we need technology advice or want to know about the best upcoming events (though sadly, not this year).

Chris is well known for his involvement in the arts community and can be seen at most local festivals, sometimes even performing with the Rubber City Ukes. He was instrumental in bringing outdoor movies to Glendale Cemetery and founded The Akronist, a news site that has highlighted the good works of our local nonprofits for nearly a decade.

Thank you, Chris, for your collaborative approach and for making Akron Community Foundation stronger. Happy 10th anniversary!
