In this essay from our Summer 2020 issue, film editor Claire Atherton speaks to the trajectory of her career and the editing philosophies she utilizes. Drawing from Taoist principles on emptiness, Atherton writes about allowing viewers of her films to create their own relationships with the work, as well as not confining herself to a strict method while editing films.

When Atherton was at the Centre Audiovisual Simone de Beauvoir, she met Chantal Ackerman with whom she would go on to have a thirty-year working relationship on Ackerman’s films, including “Letters Home” (1984) and “Sud” (1999).

In remembrance of the avant-garde feminist filmmaker, Valie Export (1940–2026), we celebrate her interview with writer Gary Indiana from our Spring 1982 issue. Export discusses her motivations to challenge the social and political norms present in Vienna during the late 20th century that inspired her films and performances.
