📚

These past weeks I got curious and gave myself a project to research and become super familiar with book formatting programs (and so many more options it will do your head in!!!). This was going to be a fun project for me as I'm usually doing the .

Lots of format their own books, which is amazing if you've got the patience to learn the software, an eye for design, and the time to make it look the way you want. OMG! 😬 I was stressing myself out all month learning all this software, seeing which one fit my design style and skills best, spending 1-2 hours per page on formatting :woman-facepalming:. I realized that the amount of time I spent learning would've been better spent doing things that I loved (writing, editing, eating chocolates) and paying to have someone else format my books.

Lesson learned, what this experiment taught me was appreciation for what I REALLY LOVE - COPY EDITING and equal appreciation for the designers who format and our books.

It's great to know, our give you the opportunity, guidance, and freedom to decide how much work each author queen does for herself during the publishing process but have your back and the experience to help YOU select the pathway that will best serve your book, your skills, and your expertise based upon your archetype and your publishing goals.

❓ What part of the Self-Publishing Process are YOU trying to do by yourself?

Let us know WHAT YOU'RE GREAT AT, WHAT YOU LOVE, and WHAT YOU'D LOVE TO HANDOFF TO SOMEONE ELSE? Can't wait to see your responses!

Leave them in the comments below!

ZENOBIA (@ 240 CE)

We really LOVE our Queens!

Zenobia (@240 CE) was the queen of the Palmyrene (Syria), known best for her empire building – stretching into Egypt, and her defiance of Rome. She did not call war on Rome, rather simply did what she wanted without overt permission. legend of Zenobia was popularized during the Middle Ages when she was admired as a clever ruler, fierce warrior and having the foresight to fill her court with the wisest men of her time. She and her reputation inspired later rulers like Catherine the Great who compared herself favorably to Zenobia. This Warrior Queen was always remembered and one of few honorable and worthy (but ultimately unsuccessful) adversary against Rome.
She ruled her way by her rules, which makes her popular with us as well!

QUEEN ELIZABETH 1

We Love our Queens!

Daughter of Henry the 8th and the doomed Anne Boleyn, the last of the Tudors, Elizabeth I reigned for an amazing 44 years . Elizabeth promoted herself as the Virgin Queen, knowing that if she married, she would immediately be subservient to her husband. She took many lovers and never a word was breathed about it, but her men achieved amazing feats of exploration and piracy in her name.
She was religiously tolerant and fairly cautious in foreign relationship. The unavoidable war with Spain quickly ended with the annihilation of the Spanish Armada, not so much because the English navy was superior but because the English weather was so unpredictable and in this case, devastating.
We know her for the poetry, portraits and plays that promoted her and she in turn funded. Which proves that if you want to become immortal, support the arts.

CLEOPATRA

We love our Queens!

Last of the Ptolemy rulers, Cleopatra was of Greek ancestry with the heart of a Egyptian. She was the only Ptolemaic ruler who bothered to learn Egyptian and to travel the length of the Nile visiting her queendom.
She supported Antony with military aid to invade Partha and Armenia (Syria, Judea, Mesopotamia). They married which triggered Rome to declare war on the couple (Specifically). Rome won, but rather than allow herself to be captured, she committed su***de (the asp thing was dramatic but scholar queens believe she just drank poison.)

MAE WEST

Mae West controlled her image and her work, starting out on Broadway, the first play she wrote and stared in was S*x, which was as popular with the audience as it was unpopular with City officials who arrested she and her cast. West was charged with "corrupting the morals of youth" and sentenced to 8 days in prison, which West cheerfully served as it helped cement her persona as a “bad girl.” She was right.

West was an early and vocal supporter of women’s and gay men’s rights. Her most famous play was Diamond Lil, opening in 1928. The play was set in the 1890s with a racy, smart, heroine, a role that West parlayed into a career on Broadway and in a success film career. Throughout her life she wrote books, plays and even recorded rock and roll albums. In 1999, the American Film Institute posthumously voted West the 15th greatest female screen legend of classic American cinema.

HARRIET TUBMAN

Born between 1820 and 1821, Harriet Tubman vowed to escape slavery since she was a child. She was inspired to help others when she helped her niece escape slavery, that triggered her efforts through the underground railroad during the Civil War. Tubman personally helped 70 people escape their situation and did not fail a single rescue. During the war she worked with the Union, including a raid that freed over 700 slaves. She did not stop there. After the war she was a strong supporter and campaigner for women’s suffrage. For this Warrior and Benevolent Mother, everyone needs to be free.

JOSEPHINE BAKER

Born in the US, Josephine Baker found not only acceptance, but outsized fame in Paris where she spend most of her life. She rose quickly to fame as a dancer at the Folies Bergere, her signature performance a solo wearing a costume of artificial bananas and beads made her the toast of Paris. Ernest Hemingway called her "the most sensational woman anyone ever saw." Picasso painted her, Cocteau promoted her.
During WWII she spied for the French, carrying information about airfields, harbors and German troops writing in invisible ink across her music.
Back in the states, she refused to perform in any venue that segregated the audience, regardless of how much money was on the table. In 1968, Coretta Scott King offered Baker an unofficial role in the Civil Rights movement, but Baker feared for the safety of her twelve adopted children and turned down the opportunity.
“I have walked into the palaces of kings and queens and into the houses of presidents. And much more. But I could not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee, and that made me mad. And when I get mad, you know that I open my big mouth. And then look out, 'cause when Josephine opens her mouth, they hear it all over the world.”

FRIDA KAHLO

“My painting carries with it the message of pain." - Frida Kahlo

We recognize Kahlo’s work as disturbingly bold and self referential. She has been folded into the Surrealists for her painting that expresses the subconscious. She was a passionate voice for Mexico and the Mexican people, even supporting the efforts of Che Guevara and Tolstoy with whom she had an affair.
Bold and untamed, this Artist Queen is also a Rebel Queen.

MARTHA GRAHAM

In 1926, Martha Graham founded her dance company and school in midtown Manhattan. She constantly experimented with how the human body moves, ultimately developing a vocabulary that would “increase the emotional activity of the dancer’s body.” Martha Graham’s dancing and choreography exposed the depths of human emotion through movements that were sharp, angular, jagged, and direct. The dance world was forever altered by Martha Graham’s vision, which has been and continues to be a source of inspiration for generations of dance and theatre artists.
She is not only an Artist Queen, but an Innovator Queen, which is her how, taking all sorts of inspirations from religious ceremonies to Emily Dickinson.

Grace O’Malley was a 16th Century pirate. An eyewitness wrote: “A most famous, feminine sea captain… famous for her stoutness of courage… commanding three galleys and 200 fighting men… This was a most notorious woman in all the coasts of Ireland.”

Gráinne Ni Mháille, anglicized to Grace O’Malley, led her own fleet with hundreds of men, spent nearly a lifetime at sea, and came face-to-face with Queen Elizabeth who not only respected O’Malley but authorized her to practice a type of piracy that allowed O’Malley to recover recent losses.

In 1603, O’Malley died the same year as Queen Elizabeth. Her legacy survived through Irish folktales and songs. Since she didn’t conform to the later ideal of dutiful wife and daughter, she was not often spoke of.

She is now, our original Pirate Queen.

Harriet Stowe published more than 30 books over 51 years, but Uncle Tom’s Cabin was her most famous and arguably her most influential novel.

During her lifetime, women were discouraged from public speaking and barred from voting, let alone holding public office, writing was her only outlet for her thoughts and beliefs. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was one of three anti-slavery novels, two more written after the success of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Stowe did not quit writing even after the runaway success of that first influential novel.

She believed her writing could make a positive difference in the world. She was right.

Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), Mary Wollstoncraft argued that the current system of female education did little more for women than prepare them to be cared for by men.

She argued that if girls were educated the same way as boys, they could work in many professions. Wollstonecraft wasn’t the only feminist of her generation, but her work was unique in suggesting that women’s lot would improve only through political change and the radical reform of the nation's education system a change that would benefit all British citizens.

Famous as she was, it was her daughter Mary Shelly who would achieve immortal fame as the author of Frankenstein.

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), known as “The Lady With the Lamp,” nursed British troops during the Crimean War where she learned and practiced the kind of sanitation we take for granted today. She was pivotal in the survival of wounded soldiers.

With the support of Queen Victoria, Nightingale helped create a Royal Commission into the health of the army. By using new data the commission determined that 16,000 out of 18,000 war deaths were due to preventable disease, not battle wounds.

Nightingale was able to translate this data into a new visual format that was as innovative as it was effective, her lectures and work inspired new standards for sanitation and earned her membership as the first woman invited to the Royal Statistical Society. She established St. Thomas’ Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860.

Her efforts to reform healthcare greatly influenced the quality of care in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Ruby Bridges was six when she became the first African American child to integrate into a white Southern elementary school.

On November 14, 1960, she was escorted to class by her mother and U.S. marshals due to violent mobs. Several years later, federal marshal Charles Burks, one of her escorts, commented with some pride that Bridges showed a lot of courage. She never cried or whimpered, Burks said, "She just marched along like a little soldier."

Bridges' brave act was a milestone in the civil rights movement, and she's shared her story with future generations in educational forums.
In 1999, Bridges formed the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of differences. Through education and inspiration, the foundation seeks to end racism and prejudice.

As its motto goes, "Racism is a grown-up disease, and we must stop using our children to spread it."

Ada Lovelace, the daughter of poet Lord Byron, has been called "the first computer programmer" for writing an algorithm for a computing machine in the mid-1800s.

Between 1842 and 1843, Ada translated an article by Italian military engineer Luigi Menabrea on the calculating engine, supplementing it with an elaborate set of notes, simply called "Notes". Lovelace's notes are important in the early history of computers, containing what many consider to be the first computer program.

Lovelace translated an article on Babbage's analytical engine that had been written by Italian engineer Luigi Federico Menabrea for a Swiss journal. She not only translated the original French text into English but also added her own thoughts and ideas on the machine. Her notes ended up being three times longer than the original article. Her work was published in 1843, in an English science journal. Lovelace used only the initials "A.A.L.," for Augusta Ada Lovelace, in the publication.
