Bryce Ames is fantastic tuba player from Trenton, Maine, and he is featured on this week's episode of From the Top!

Bryce just graduated from Interlochen Center for the Arts Academy but he started his tuba journey as a freshman at Mount Desert Island High School Music in Maine with a teacher named Bill Whitener who had a big impact on him. He was part of Maine’s All State Band in 2024.

He's also a recipient of From the Top’s Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award.

This Sunday and Monday at noon, on State of the Art:

The Portland Symphony Orchestra is just days away from the start of its 2026-27 season – making the orchestra now 102 years young. The season kicks off with an all-American program with a local twist, in a nod to the country’s 250th anniversary.

It’s also a season that welcomes A-list guest artists, both new and returning, and delivers one Russian tour de force after another – not least some of the best loved by Rachmaninoff.

The orchestra’s Music Director, Eckart Preu, now in his 7th year at the helm, popped into the studio this week to walk through the upcoming season and tease us with all its goodies.

🎨 This Sunday and Monday at noon on State of the Art 🎨

Kay Liss and Mark Coates of Wiscasset’s The Maine Art Gallery on their annual members show, Made in Maine

In recent days, Wiscasset’s Maine Art Gallery opened its final exhibition of the 2026 season – Made in Maine, its annual members show. Running through October 18, the juried exhibition showcases recent work by artist members of the gallery. This year the show also highlights work from some of the early members of the gallery, emphasizing their role and the gallery’s in the history of the visual arts in Maine.

Two folks from the Maine Art Gallery join us this week on State of the Art to talk about all this – its president, Kay Liss, and co-chair of the Made in Maine exhibition, Mark Coates.
