šŸŽ¶ This Week on State of the Art: šŸŽ¶

Virgil Bozeman and Dean Stein chat with host Heather McDougall about their upcoming performances of James MacMillan’s Stabat Mater with Una Voce Chamber Choir.

Back in 2018, one musical work was given the green light to be performed inside the Sistine Chapel beneath Michaelangelo’s frescoes. This was a landmark moment – the first ever Facebook live streamed event in the Chapel and what musical work enjoyed this rare privilege? The Stabat Mater by contemporary Scottish composer James MacMillan. This piece has some local resonance, partly for its interesting origins and also for the upcoming performances of it due to happen in Brunswick in a few weeks’ time.

This week’s guests are two folks playing a big part in making those performances happen – Virgil Bozeman, Artistic Director of the Una Voce Chamber Choir, and Dean Stein, violinist, co-founder of VentiCordi Chamber Music and concertmaster for these upcoming performances.

Una Voce Chamber Choir presents "There Stood the Mother"
Friday June 12th at 7pm and Sunday June 14th at 2pm
Studzinski Hall, Bowdoin College, Brunswick

🌺The final LIVE The Metropolitan Opera broadcast of the season: tune in this Saturday at 1pm on Maine Public Classical 🌺

'El Último SueƱo de Frida y Diego', American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, is a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz.

Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Ɓlvarez.

šŸŽ¶ This Week on State of the Art šŸŽ¶

The Canon for Liturgy & Music at St. Luke’s Cathedral, Portland, Christian Clough talks about the upcoming performances of Arvo PƤrt’s Berliner Messe on June 7.

Arvo PƤrt is a contemporary Estonian composer whose work straddles the avant garde and the realm of sacred music. It could be heard in the sanctuary of a church as readily as part of the French Underground or in an episode of Ted Lasso, so to say it is transcendent is both true and an understatement.

In June, the Choir of St. Luke’s Cathedral in Portland will be doing their part in bringing his music to Mainers, with two rare performances of PƤrt’s Berliner Messe in what is the composer’s 90th year, folding it into two special Choral Eucharist services on Sunday June 7 at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

For more details about the performances and the wider events program at St. Luke’s Cathedral, go to cathedralofsaintluke.org.

State of the Art airs Sundays and Mondays at noon on Maine Public Classical. The full interview can be heard on-demand at mainepublic.org starting Monday afternoon.
