Perched above Trinidad Bay, the Trinidad Head Lighthouse has stood watch over California’s rugged North Coast since 1871. While the lighthouse is only open to visitors 12 days each year, the views from Trinidad Head are available year-round, with dramatic sea stacks, migrating whales, and sweeping Pacific Ocean vistas.

The story behind this photo:

The Northern California coast had been getting hammered by rain for days. By the time we reached this remote stretch of beach, everyone else had already retreated to the car.

I stayed.

For nearly an hour I stood in the rain with a camera that wasn’t weather sealed, taking photo after photo as the storm rolled across the coastline. Hundreds of frames later, soaked and questioning whether it was worth the risk, I captured the image you’re looking at now.

Sometimes the best photos aren’t about being in the right place. They’re about staying a little longer than everyone else.
