Nine spellers out of the original 247 will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals Thursday night. They achieved that honor by successfully competing in nine rounds of spelling and vocabulary questions.

Lauren Merillana of North Potomac tied for 10th place in the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee. It was her second appearance at the Bee.

Thursday morning, Montgomery County and Takoma Park officials and long-time residents gathered to unveil a plaque at Heffner Park, named in 1952 after former Takoma Park Councilmember Herman Heffner.
