🆘🚨 Published in Sound On Sound! 🚨🆘

Thrilled to share that my article, “The Last Five Percent: What Mastering Can and Can’t Do,” is featured as a Technique Masterclass in the September issue of — with a cover-line mention.

Sound On Sound has been one of the most respected voices in our field for decades, and a compass for me since the beginning. To now see my work in its pages feels full-circle and a real honor.

Grateful to Sam and the SOS team for the thoughtful edits and beautiful layout.

Mastering is not an extension of mixing. It requires its own skill set — and, above all, a philosophy of “first do no harm”.

By the time a mix reaches the mastering stage, most of the big decisions have been made. It’s tempting to think that one last tweak — the final five percent — might turn a good song into a great one. But often, the real job is resisting that urge. It’s vital to understand which tiny adjustments truly serve the music, and which might rob it of its soul.

We take a look at what Mastering Can & Can't Do in the latest edition

Finishing a project is an emotional act. Thanks to SonicScoop for letting me dig into the psychology behind it - hope it resonates.

Why is saying you are "done" with the mix so hard?

After mastering over 1,600 releases across genres, mastering engineer Alexander Wright has developed some thoughts on how best to complete your music productions.

He shares them today in a guest post.

I’ve been writing more lately—on sound, attention, and the quieter dimensions of creative work. Mastering is still at the core, but the philosophy is evolving.

If you’re curious, I’ve been sharing some of it over on Medium:

Read writing from Alexander Wright on Medium. Writer & Mastering Engineer based in Seattle. Exploring sound, attention, and finalization. Published in Sound On Sound, SonicScoop, and Production Expert.

I’ve never been great at loud self-promotion. But I am proud of this.

Mastering is quiet, invisible work. It suits me, and over the years, I’ve come to see how deeply it resonates with my neurodivergent brain.

I wrote this for anyone who’s ever felt too sensitive for the world, but found refuge in music.

My streaming numbers for 2022. This isn’t everything (and doesn’t include Apple Music streams) but I am extremely grateful for every credit attributed to me.

I have to say that probably the biggest point of pride for me is that I did this independently. I was forced into freelancing by a crazy year in 2020, but in the end it was a blessing in disguise despite the difficulties of entering this industry without an established name behind me. I started my own business, learnt a lot of hard lessons, worked my ass off 24/7 for years, and am very proud of what I have accomplished. At this point I would - and have - sincerely and humbly put my masters up against what any other engineer can do (while acknowledging that this can be a subjective process and we all have our strengths and weaknesses regarding genre, format, etc). It has taken years for me to get here but I believe earning that sort of confidence is essential. I no longer feel a sense of competition but rather an inner peace knowing I have already accomplished what I had thought impossible. Now I just want to enjoy the process and help artists thrive as much as I can.

Here’s to wishing for a happy, healthy 2023 and lots more music to come ✌️♥️🔊 Happy new year!

Cheers to another year of great music! 🍻 In 2022 I surpassed 1,000 career releases and I couldn’t be more proud of all the music I’ve engineered and the people with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working.

Thank you to each and every artist who has trusted me with putting the final touches on their music. Your faith in me means more than you know, and I invest more of myself into the mastering process than most people realize. I am humbled and honored to make a living doing something I love so deeply.

I’m blown away by the quality of music coming my way these days. So one more huge, unconditional thank you to everyone who has trusted me with their music. I know what it’s like to create a song and how personal it feels. I live and breathe this craft and I look forward to moving onward and upward with you all! 🙏♥️🔊

Thousands of hours of work led to tens of millions of streams and 350+ songs mastered and released this year. I have enjoyed working on this music so much, and there’s a bit of everything involved from experimental ambient to pop to jazz to metal.

It has been an incredibly difficult and rewarding journey to grow my business independently under my own name. Looking back at the music I’ve been a part of this year and the progress I’ve made in this industry brings me a lot of joy. I am so grateful for all the musicians, producers, mixers and other creatives who played a part in each and every one of these projects. Thank you for trusting me with your mastering; this craft is my calling and my passion, and I can’t wait to see what next year brings.

If you’d like to hear any of these songs, hit the link in my bio and choose your streaming service.
Happy holidays everyone!

PS. I could only tag 20 of the people I’ve worked with most frequently this year.

This year I mastered 289 songs that were collectively streamed millions of times across the world. I could not be more proud of every one of these artists, and I can’t thank them enough for trusting me with putting the final touches on their music! This is my absolute passion and my sole focus professionally. I’m so excited to hear all the great music 2021 brings.

Happy holidays!
