For almost 20 years of helping veterans, I’ve noticed one consistent trait among those who struggle with the transition: they don’t want to be a beginner again.
Many leave the military with years of experience and leadership, but they’re reluctant to start over in a new career, learn a new skill, or put themselves in a room where they’re the least experienced person. They stay in the same circles, surrounded by people who often aren’t equipped to help them grow.
The veterans who embrace being “the new guy” have a completely different transition. They seek mentors, build networks that include both veterans and civilians, learn new industries, and aren’t afraid to ask questions. Those are often the veterans who land higher-paying careers, create new opportunities, and build fulfilling lives after service.
Your military experience made you good at being uncomfortable. Don’t lose that.
Be a beginner again.
I promise it won’t be that bad.
