Jacques Menache is launching a series of Live Broadcasts with as many guests as possible to be held every week-day from 1 to 2 pm through Thanksgiving.
You will be the Hosts. So will I. It is called the State of the Station and it will address what I consider to be a crisis of identity here at WCOM.
We have to renew or to die. Unless we renew, we will not survive the next twenty years. With the proliferation of social media, podcasts, Youtube channels, Spotify, to name just a few, is there a need for our community radio station? Indeed, does anyone listen to the radio anymore?

Mark your calendars! On Thursday, October 23rd, the Haw River Ballroom will come alive with sound, spirit, and solidarity for Music for Mental Health, a powerful evening presented by Be Good to Yourself (BGTY).

This special event brings together some of North Carolina’s most iconic acts—The Connells, The Roman Spring, and The Veldt—for a concert with a mission: ensuring that our music community has access to the mental health and addiction care it deserves.

About Be Good to Yourself
Founded in late 2019, BGTY has spent the past six years working tirelessly to support North Carolina musicians, venue and studio workers, and their families. Their vision is simple but vital: make counseling and treatment accessible—either free or at deeply reduced costs—for the people who create and sustain our music scene.

To make this vision possible, BGTY has partnered with two incredible organizations:

The SIMS Foundation, created in Austin, TX by legendary musician Alejandro Escovedo, which has provided nearly 25 years of care to Austin’s music community.

Backline, a national nonprofit connecting music professionals to mental health and wellness providers across the country.

Together, this network is laying the groundwork for a statewide support system right here in North Carolina.

Why This Event Matters
Music for Mental Health isn’t just another show—it’s the culmination of six years of fundraising, advocacy, and community love. This night celebrates the official launch of BGTY’s services in North Carolina, with care for musicians and their families set to begin as early as January 2026.

For the countless artists, venue workers, and behind-the-scenes teams who give so much of themselves to create the soundtrack of our lives, this marks the beginning of something life-changing.

“This week, our station, WCOM, was featured by UNC’s newspaper The Daily Tar Heel for one of its Spanish-language programs, “Vientos del Sur.”

This is a communicational and community initiative that combines in-studio conversations with music from South America and different parts of the world. It addresses topics such as immigration, Latin American and U.S. culture, art, social participation, citizenship, and health. The Daily Tar Heel was drawn to this experience, which is soon approaching its 200th episode, has included various UNC initiatives among its guests, and seeks to reduce the gap between community members and the resources available to them.

According to Rodrigo Tossi, this is a collective achievement of all WCOM members—founders, DJs, and hosts—who make the effort to provide quality content and connect the Carrboro-Chapel Hill community through this powerful communication platform that is WCOM, with 20 years of history.

“Vientos del Sur” airs on Tuesdays from 11 am to 1 pm, in Spanish, and is later available on Spinitron.
Rodrigo Tossi is a Psychologist, holds an MA in Health and an MA in Documentary Film, and specializes in health and communications.”
