📏The 100-Line Math and Design Challenge!🎨

During the school year, students at Madison Elementary School were challenged to work together toward the goal of using 100 lines to create a unique design.

This hands-on activity combined math, art, and teamwork. Students practiced counting and keeping track of their lines, using different types of lines to create shapes and patterns, planning their designs, and developing spatial awareness.

The challenge also encouraged creativity, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. At the end of class, students received rulers provided by Do The Math 247 partner Total Care to take home and continue creating and learning.

Thank you Iowa Total Care, Matthew Beitelspacher, and Peggy Mongar for providing the rulers, pencils, and poster paper for the students! ❤️

👟 Walking in Someone Else's Shoes ❤️

During our Do The Math 247 Character-Building Summer Class at Samuelson Elementary School, students explored one simple but powerful question:
"What does it mean to walk in someone else's shoes?"

After discussing empathy and the importance of understanding other people's thoughts and feelings, students designed their own colorful Empathy Shoes. Every shoe was unique—just like every student and every life experience.

As they designed their shoes and proudly shared their creations, students were reminded that empathy means taking time to listen, show kindness, and consider another person's perspective before passing judgment.

🎉 Reflecting on an Incredible School Year! ❤️

During the 2025–2026 school year, we had the privilege of spending time with the amazing students at Weeks Middle School.

From welcoming incoming students during the 6th Grade Orientation to school-wide anti-bullying assemblies, it was an honor to encourage students to choose kindness, respect, empathy, and positive leadership every day.

Thank you, Weeks Middle School, for partnering with Do The Math 247 to support and encourage students. We're grateful for the opportunity to invest in the next generation of leaders and can't wait for what the new school year brings! ❤️

❤️ Empowering Students Through Poetry ❤️

A heartfelt thank you to Saaliyah Aalynn Saaliyah Aalynn and Sabur Muhammad🪞(C?ue) Sabur "C?ue" Muhammad for taking the time to inspire the students during the Do The Math 247 Summer Class at Harding Middle School.

The students had the opportunity to experience the impact of spoken word as both poets shared their incredible talents, personal journeys, and the importance of using their voices to inspire, encourage, and make a positive impact.

Saaliyah Aalynn is an award-winning poet and spoken word artist who won 1st Place at the Iowa Poetry Association Des Moines Qualifier and went on to earn 3rd Place in the 2025 Iowa Poetry Association Slam Finals.

Sabur "C?ue" Muhammad is an award-winning poet and spoken word artist and two-time back-to-back Iowa Poetry Association Poetry Slam Champion (2024 & 2025). He has consistently ranked among the nation's top 10 slam poets, represented Iowa City on the global stage during the 2024 UNESCO Slam-O-Vision competition, and won a Tri-State poetry slam competition featuring poets from Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas.

Thank you both for showing the students that words have the power to inspire, encourage, and create positive change. Your willingness to invest in the next generation is truly appreciated.

During a Do The Math 247 Summer Class at Samuelson Elementary School with a group of amazing 3rd graders, we explored one of the most important lessons a child can learn—self-respect.

We talked about what it means to believe in yourself, speak kindly to yourself, make positive choices, and treat others with respect. Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities (Do The Math 247 Self-Respect Mirror Activity), students discovered that self-respect isn't about being better than anyone else—it's about recognizing your worth while showing kindness and respect to those around you.

Thank you, Hip-Hope Inc. and Regina TheGudmom Turner Regina Turner, for trusting me to pour into your incredible youth. It was an honor to spend time encouraging the next generation and reminding them that they already possess the potential to do great things.

I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to play a small part in their journey. Together, we're helping young people develop the character, confidence, and leadership skills that will empower them to make a positive impact in their schools, communities, and beyond.

What lesson do you think young people need more of today?

During the Do The Math 247 Character-Building Summer Class at Harding Middle School we spent time talking about Etiquette—not just table manners or when it's appropriate to put away a cell phone, but the deeper lesson behind it all: respect.

We discussed table and dinner etiquette, cell phone etiquette, social media etiquette, classroom etiquette, and everyday social etiquette. Each conversation reminded students that the way we treat others often speaks louder than our words.

Good etiquette isn't about following a list of rules. It's about making people feel valued, respected, and comfortable. Those habits carry into friendships, future careers, family life, and our communities.

When we teach young people how to show consideration for others, we're doing more than teaching manners—we're helping shape thoughtful, respectful leaders for tomorrow.
