The New 729 Area Code is Coming to the Tennessee 423 Area Code Region

To ensure new telephone numbers are available, the Tennessee Public Utility Commission approved the addition of the new 729 area code to the geographic region served by the 423 area code. This process is known as an area code overlay.

What is an area code overlay?

An overlay is the addition of another area code (729) to the same geographic region as an existing area code (423). An overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code but does require using a new dialing procedure to complete calls.

Who will be affected?

Anyone with a 423 area code will be affected. The 423 area code covers two non-contiguous regions in eastern Tennessee, serving communities such as Chattanooga, Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport, as well as many other smaller communities. The new 729 area code will serve the same geographic region currently served by
the existing 423 area code.

What will be the new dialing procedure?

All calls in the 423 area code that are currently dialed with seven digits will need to be dialed using the area code + 7-digit telephone number. The same dialing procedure will apply to telephone numbers that are assigned in
the new 729 area code.

When will the dialing change begin?

Effective August 5, 2024, dial the area code + telephone number whenever you place a call, including calls within your
same area code. If you forget and dial just seven digits, your call will still be completed. Beginning February 5, 2025, you must dial the area code + telephone number on all calls, including calls within your same area code. On and after this date, if you do not dial the area code + telephone number, your call will not be completed, and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again, including the area code.

Beginning March 5, 2025, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the new 729 area code. If you have a number in the new 729 area code, you must dial the area code + telephone number or the call will not complete.

What will change?

Dial the area code + telephone number for local calls.
All services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed to dial a 7-digit number will need to be reprogrammed to include the area code. Some examples include: life safety systems and medical monitoring devices, fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, contact
lists in wireless or mobile phones, speed dialers, call forwarding settings, voicemail services and similar functions, etc.
Update your websites, personal and business stationery and checks, advertising materials, personal and pet ID tags and other such items to ensure the area code is included.
What will remain the same?

Your telephone number, including current area code.
The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.
What is a local call now will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed.
You can still dial just three digits to reach 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 or 811 if available in your area.

I apologize for the length of this post, but it is necessary.

As an instructor, who genuinely cares, it is always heartbreaking when someone comes to class, expecting to get certified for a permit, yet having done nothing to prepare for the course. We see an overwhelming number of people who come to class for permit certification, to learn that they’ve never fired a handgun in their life. The certification day isn’t the ideal day to be your first time handling or operating a handgun. The day of class is a day in which we have to give every student our attention and therefore we simply cannot give a beginner or novice the one on one attention needed for their first time. To make this day a person’s first time, is a recipe for total disaster.

We also encounter people who, after having difficulties in the range portion of training, reveal that they are having eyesight issues and cannot see either their sights or the target very well at all. Again, a recipe for total disaster.

Additionally, please choose your training tool very carefully as well. The ability to see sights and ascertain where your training handgun is pointing, is of the utmost importance. Our state mandated training, prescribes firing 50 rounds at a paper target. If your training tool only has one magazine and holds 6-7 rounds, repeated reloading of the magazine will be required, therefore it is recommended that you have multiple magazines for a smaller handgun with lower capacity. Otherwise, this will reduce the positivity of your training experience. Once again, we see a recipe for a disastrous training experience.

No matter what training school that you choose to train with, please give yourself every opportunity to succeed. When we respond to confirm class scheduling, we communicate, in writing, tips and instructions to assist the student in their endeavor. Too many times, we hear that our information wasn’t read at all. We offer our services and are available to answer questions, give tips, and pre-class instructions before the day of class. However, all too often we see these offers never accepted or requested. As instructors, we are here to assist and do everything we can to provide for your success, and in exchange, please give yourself those same efforts and opportunities. It truly breaks the heart of any caring instructor to have to advise any person that they have failed in their attempt to get the necessary training to get a carry permit.
