Submission opportunity for an anthology about trans people and LOVE!

I want to make an anthology of writing about love and trans people. I've been thinking about this for a long time, and I've been thinking about the stories I want to hear. Love, from what I know, can be about a whole variety of things, and a whole variety of feelings, and…

“Meanwhile, Elsewhere” Envisions a New World for Trans Readers

Great review of Meanwhile, Elsewhere: Science Fiction & Fantasy from Transgender writers up at Bith Magazine. Thanks Katherine Cross! Buy the book at topsidepress.com

"Like the best sci-fi, these stories challenge the visions of the future promulgated by people not thinking carefully enough about it. This is an anthology about otter butts and individualism; videogames and death; alternate realities and our own less-than-stellar dimension; gentrification and gender mutation. The book itself is cleverly designed spec-fic; the blurb on its back cover advertises it as “The #1 post-reality generation device approved for home use!” and enjoins you to “experience post-reality as a transgender human!”

I recommend you do as the mysterious book says."

A banal world is in the realm of fantasy for trans people.

Beyond Binaries and Convention: Kay Ulanday Barrett on Ancestry, Disability, and Identity Formation

Kay Ulanday Barrett in Bitch Magazine discussing their book, When The Chant Comes:

"I believe that we have to write for ourselves. We have to create our own pathways for each other and vouch for each other. I believe we have to have accomplices, including neurotypical and able-bodied people who will not just share, but be informed about uplifting our work. I believe that giving access to resources is a fundamental responsibility to extend care, craft, and support for writers and poets who don’t have that access."

I am not interested in having white Americans take my family’s tongue and practices for some poetic getaway.

"Meanwhile Elsewhere is good, weird, out of this world, and occasionally trashy. But more importantly, it defies the singular trans story of the mainstream media, and shows how visionary and interesting trans writers are when they have the chance to write stories they really want to tell."

Fun, frenetic antidotes to that mainstream trans story.

"Dispensing with poetic subtlety in favor of raw kinetic energy, KOKUMO nonetheless achieves enormous nuance of political and emotional expression. Where most writers might fear to tread, poems such as “Love Is Not the Revolution,” “Apology Panderin” and “White Feminist Barbie” speak without apology to the experiences of those who have survived not only queerphobia and transphobia but also the psychological and sexual violence of the queer movement itself."

KOKUMO blasts through the bullsh*t rhetoric and tokenism that too-often engulf queer and trans communities in order to expose the raw struggle to survive at their heart.

"I believe in celebrating those who’ve done the work before and alongside you. Before social media and cultural capital by way of likes, we as a community had to work together in ways that were personal and messy. We had to confirm together and personally that our work was moving forward. I think the list poem, engaged by the shout-out isn’t just specifically POC by practice, but inherently generative and unabashed. I wanted to convey not simply respect for what the people in the poem are surviving, but identify the communal power of QTPOC being listed one after another, almost like a chant."

"I want for people to have some sort of archive of their dance, night, poetry, and art spaces. I want us to remember what keeps/kept us alive when the rainbow flags and assimilation try to steamroll over the complexity of our lives." #authorinterview #hmelt #kayulandaybarrett

BGD Book Review: When The Chant Comes By Kay Ulanday Barrett

"When the Chant Comes”, the namesake poem, gives a structure to the collection’s pursuit of solace that may or may not exist, or exists in valuable, but brief moments. While Kay may never say it himself, as he says he was “never any good at prayer”, this book reads as a brown queer spiritual. After reading Kay’s poem “read this whenever you are tempted,” I copied it into my diary like a hymn. Like it instructs, I read it on days when the tide of the day is too strong to get out of bed. Where do we find relief? Where do we turn when we can’t hold ourselves up?"
