Mending the Line

Today is Frank Moore's 99th birthday. Frank transitioned peacefully this week surrounded by family. We'll never be able to adequately summarize the impact that Frank had on thousands of people in his life as a solider in WWII, builder and proprietor of the Steamboat Inn, fly fisherman, champion for conservation in the Umpqua and Steamboat Watersheds, husband, father, and surrogate grandfather to a sprawling flock of humans from all corners of the planet. Throughout life, his doors and his heart have been open to others, welcoming newcomers and old friends with a handshake or hug that would either cure, or cause, a chiropractic issue. What we felt and observed in Frank in the last golden decade of his life, was an attentiveness and sincerity in almost every interaction...as if the encounter would be the last opportunity to express his sentiments, and be a final goodby. He left nothing unsaid....whether through laughter or tears. His capacity to be in the moment with another human is an example all of us can look to as we navigate our own precious lives. Frank's charm, humor, love, and wisdom will be missed, but his spirit lingers everywhere. The Uncage crew feels extraordinary gratitude for all that Frank contributed to our lives and it's been an absolute honor to share in a small chapter of his. If you haven't seen it already, please enjoy the full length version of Mending the Line. We love you Frank. We'll see you on the water and hear you in the wind. ❤️

Miss Dish And The Volcano: How Kathy Phibbs Changed The Face Of Northwest Mountaineering

Once upon a time Mount St. Helens blew her top, and 7 years later an intrepid mountaineer in red chiffon reached the freshly crop-topped summit and began a Mother's Day tradition like no other. "Miss Dish And The Volcano" is a beautiful story featuring one of our favorite mountains, produced by our good friend Ian McCluskey for Oregon Field Guide, with footage shot by another good friend, Jim Aikman.

This year Mount St. Helens will enjoy a respite from the fancy scrambles of decked out Mother's Day climbers. All moms need a break. But if you locals catch a glimpse of that well-known dome in the distance, maybe lift your mimosa up with us in a shared thank you to that beautiful mountain, and to the woman in red chiffon who mothered in a more inclusive era in mountaineering.

When Mount St. Helens reopened to climbers after its historic eruption, a woman in a red chiffon dress and pillbox hat changed the face of Northwest mountaineering forever.

Watch Now: Discovering Valhalla

What are secrets? Secrets are stories that are meant to be kept hidden, unknown by others. They are the stories that are held close, selectively shared with intimate trust that in the sharing the story won’t meet its own end. On the other side of a secret, of course, is discovery. How do we approach discovery responsibly? What do we do with the gained knowledge of something that was once a secret? How do we respect the intimate trust that was accidentally bestowed when the secret was revealed? 🤔 We’re looking back to the story of Valhalla, Oregon’s once-secret slot canyon. On this day in 2016 the world got to take a peek behind the Cascades' curtain when Oregon Field Guide unveiled the Valhalla episode at Portland’s iconic Hollywood Theater.

We look to the past not with longing, but with learning. It’s within our own stories that meaningful discoveries can be made.

. . . . . . . .
Thank you to Oregon Field Guide, Pro Photo Supply, Icebreaker, SealLine, and Five Ten.

Oregon Field Guide assembles its largest, most complex expedition ever to take you on an unparalleled adventure of discovery.

Drone technology has given us wings that were once unfathomable. And with great power, comes great responsibility. As FAA licensed drone operators, we fly only where permitted, and are sensitive to the wildlife and landscape around us. Drones are awesome, but they can also be super annoying, and sometimes there are tempting shots that should not be nabbed. As drone tech evolves and their usage increases, Uncage The Soul remains committed to abiding by best practices. Sometimes it’s best to remain grounded, even when you have the wings to fly.

The Hunt

The owl has been a visual and spiritual symbol of Uncage The Soul for nearly a decade. The owl embodies so much of the soul of our work. We aim to be as perceptive, dynamic, intentional, and refined as this remarkable creature. To be still and aware, to be active and focused, and to spread our wings with trust and gratitude. This video wasn’t created to try to DO or BE anything. It’s simply a tribute, honoring an animal spirit that has been a companion to Uncage The Soul for so long.

A note of thanks to our friend Ken Shults for his kind tutelage in the patient art of Great Grey Owl photography. There’s a link in the first comments to an Oregon Field Guide episode about Ken. Highly recommended.

This was shot on Sony a7iii/200-600. The owl was not disturbed or baited.

Our Wild Future - Castleton Tower

We’re excited to share the 5th video in the The Conservation Alliance success story series, . In 2001, funding by The Conservation Alliance led to the acquisition of 221 acres surrounding iconic Castleton Tower in Castle Valley, Utah. Once threatened by development, the local climbing community and Utah Open Lands worked together to secure permanent access to Castleton Tower. Please watch, share, and follow Utah Open Lands for info on how you can get involved in protecting and preserving Utah’s open spaces.

Our Wild Future - Adirondack Park

Our latest video for The Conservation Alliance is a story about Boreas Ponds in New York’s Adirondack Park, and the persistence it takes to reclaim, expand, and create wilderness. Adirondack Council's Diane Fish and Tyler Frakes spent ten years working to protect 63,000 acres in the Adirondack Forest Preserve, including the 20,484-acre Boreas Ponds tract. Once privately owned, Boreas Ponds is now part of the High Peaks Wilderness Area and protected in perpetuity from logging and development. Watch as Diane and Tyler take us on a paddle through this new motor-free wilderness.

Casting It Forward

In this short documentary, we pick up where our feature-length film, “Mending The Line” leaves off. “Mending The Line” told the story of WWII veteran and legendary fly fisherman, Frank Moore, returning to Normandy, France, with his wife, Jeanne, to fly fish the rivers where he once fought as a soldier. It was during the production of “Mending The Line” that Frank met Rusty Lininger, a young Iraq War veteran, who was traumatized by war and was finding his own healing through tying flies and fly fishing. In “Casting It Forward” Rusty and his family gather to honor Frank and Jeanne's lifelong dedication to the conservation of the Steamboat Creek watershed, a natural sanctuary that will now be preserved thanks to their efforts, so that others may continue to find healing along the North Umpqua River.

It's no small feat to climb a mountain, any mountain, no matter who you are. So we train! Over the summer we joined the team from Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma on a training hike on Mt. Hood to help prepare for an upcoming trek in Patagonia, coordinated by our friends at Embark Exploration Co. Coincidentally, this is the 15th anniversary of Uncage the Soul Productions, which came to life after a Patagonia trip in 2004! Time keeps flying. And we keep climbing! Uncage the Soul!

Unlikely allies collaborating on a conservation easement ... sounds like a great story, right? Because it is! And it's a TRUE story. The latest video in a series for The Conservation Alliance is a story of partnership, and community.

Whatcom Land Trust, the City of Bellingham, WA, and Galbraith Tree Farm demonstrate how a working tree farm and public recreation can exist simultaneously. This partnership means public access to more than 2,000 acres has been preserved, another Conservation Alliance success story, for .

This is Emily. Sincere, gently assertive, and committed to leaning into where her curiosity leads her. Emily reached out to us this last spring, curious about interning with Uncage the Soul in order to complement her film education at Portland State University. She joined us on a trial spring internship, thrown into the wilds of video production, which requires constant problem-solving and a fluidity between shifting roles and responsibilities in order to meet the high expectations from ourselves and clients. Emily navigated these wilds with grace, confidence, and patience, and we eagerly brought her on as a full-time intern over the summer. Through it all — the tedious assembly of a rough edit, the awkwardness of lugging a heavy backpack to a remote location, the patience of integrating sound design — Emily Price has approached each piece of the production puzzle with eagerness and a willing smile. We are so incredibly grateful to have this rockstar in our midst, forever a part of the Uncage the Soul family. THANK YOU EMILY!!!

TechTown Portland: People On The Move

In 2013 there was TechTown I, a recruitment initiative by a coalition of Portland's tech companies to bring more industry talent to the city. In 2014 there was TechTown II -- shared here -- which featured six people who took that leap and made the move to Portland to be a part of the growing and thriving tech industry. And coming soon, TechTown III, another Portland tech collaboration that explores how some of these companies are investing in the community that nurtured them.

Go give hugs and a high five to Robert, meet some neighbors and check out some art! 🍁

Our Wild Future - Steamboat Creek Steelhead Sanctuary

The first video to roll out for "Our Wild Future" - a project for The Conservation Alliance - is one that is very near and very dear to our hearts, and if you've been following us for any amount of time, you're already familiar with these beautiful humans. Frank and Jeanne Moore are two of the most dedicated stewards we have ever met. They have committed their lives to protecting and preserving the Steamboat Creek watershed, along Oregon's Umpqua River, for the health of the fish, the wildlife, and the humans who find solace and healing there.

Thanks to their decades of conservation efforts, supported by organizations like Pacific Rivers and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, and the advocacy power of The Conservation Alliance, the Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Sanctuary was signed into passage earlier this year!

We can do more together. This truth has been evident on every journey we’ve been fortunate to join with Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma. Helping one another across chasms, shouldering weight when a burden is too much to bear, sharing in the sweat, tears, and overwhelming emotion of climbing mountains, literal and figurative. If we could harness the cooperative energy and sheer determination of this group and blast it back out to the rest of the world, what a magnificent display of global goodwill it would be.

Our Wild Future - The Conservation Alliance

Strength in numbers. That's the brilliance of The Conservation Alliance. For 30 years outdoor brands and organizations of ALL sizes have been coming together as Conservation Alliance members to ensure our collective best effort is put forth in the name of protecting and preserving threatened wild places. Uncage the Soul is proud to be one of those contributing members, pooling our resources to provide effective grants that are then distributed, ensuring the success of conservation initiatives.

Success means over $20 million in grants issued since 1989, critical funds that have helped preserve 51 million acres of wildlands, protect 3,107 miles of rivers, stop or remove 34 dams, designate 5 marine reserves, and create 14 climbing areas.

Wild places don't protect themselves. And while the best time to act is yesterday, the second best time to act is now. Please watch. Then please tag/share with companies and organizations who should consider adding their voice as a new Conservation Alliance member. Maybe that's even you ...

Thank you!

Some of our most favorite projects have been right here in Oregon, helping folks discover (or re-discover!) gems that are practically in our own backyard, like Newport, Oregon. We'd like to do more of this please. 😁 So here's a quick question for you: If you could pick any town, city, or community in Oregon or Washington for us to highlight in a local tourism video, where would it be?

MM4MM Mt. Washington 2019 Documentary

We've trekked many mountains with Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma, but it's never the same experience twice. The stories from those who are living with this disease are as diverse as the clouds that passed over our heads as we climbed Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. But all of us -- patients, caregivers, medical providers, and support crew -- were all on the mountain for one reason: to find a cure for multiple myeloma. And so we climb!
