From clear spring creeks to canyon rivers, Central Oregon is one of the West’s most renowned fly-fishing destinations.

Near Camp Sherman, the Metolius runs cold, clear, and challenging. North of Bend, the Lower Deschutes cuts through basalt canyon walls on its way to the Columbia. The Crooked River is known for year-round redband trout fishing, while the Fall River stays steady through every season, even when winter brings snow.

In “Cast Away,” writer Gregg Morris explores where to fish, what to bring, and why these waters continue to draw anglers to Central Oregon.

Founded in 1863 and later shaped by the sugar plantation era, Kīlauea remains one of Kauaʻi’s most inviting North Shore towns. Its historic stone buildings now house cafés, shops, and restaurants, while the surrounding coastline, gardens, and trails make it easy to spend a full day in and around town.

In “Destination: Kīlauea,” writer Krystal Kakimoto follows a day that begins with coffee and Morning Wraps at Kilauea Market + Cafe, then moves through local shops such as Hunter Gatherer, ocean views at Daniel K. Inouye Kīlauea Point Lighthouse, and the sculpture gardens of Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens & Sculpture Park.

The day continues with a walk along the Wai Koa Loop Trail to the 1880s stone dam, then ends with dinner at Avalon Gastropub or Palate Kilauea.

Along Hawaiʻi Island’s northern coast, the valleys of Kohala hold some of the island’s most striking landscapes.

From Pololū, reached at the end of the road beyond Hāwī and Kapaʻau, to the deep valleys of Waipiʻo and Waimanu, this coastline is shaped by rain, ocean, cliffs, and centuries of cultural history. Each valley offers a different view into the island’s natural history, from black-sand shorelines and steep green walls to places still defined by farming, tradition, and access that requires time and care.

In “Verdant Valleys,” writer Andrew Walsh explores the natural beauty, history, and quiet power of these lush valleys.

Two hours south of Bend, Oregon's only national park, Crater Lake National Park, offers a 33-mile Rim Drive, trails from gentle to lung-busting, more than 500 inches of winter snow, and some of the darkest skies in the state. Writer Gregg Morris takes us around the rim in "Sacred Blue."

Deep in Maui's remote valleys and forests, a small team of field botanists is working against the clock. The Plant Extinction Prevention Program protects over 200 of Hawai'i's most critically endangered plants — some with fewer than 50 individuals left in the wild, a few down to just one. Their work is part science, part hospice care, and entirely driven by hope. Read "Nature's Relics" to learn how this dedicated crew is fighting to save Hawai'i's rarest species, one plant at a time. https://savvy360.com/destination/maui/stories/natures-relics

From plate lunches to shave ice, Kaua'i's roadside stands have long served as a staple for locally sourced, onolicious treats and meals — casual stops that reflect the island's flavors and laid-back spirit. Stands like Coconut Corner are a reminder of why roadside grindz remain such a beloved part of island life.

Once a royal fishpond built under King Kamehameha I, Kīholo suffered from decades of overuse and the spread of invasive species. Since 2007, Hui Aloha Kiholo and The Nature Conservancy, Hawaii and Palmyra have restored it with help from thousands of volunteers, bringing back native fish, endangered birds, and Hawaiian hoary bats.
