What does it take to stay fully human in a world relentlessly pressuring us to become less?

Issue 31 of Speak the Sojourner refuses to look away from that question.

We're living through a moment that demands resilience but rarely grants rest. That demands courage while making tenderness feel like a liability. That asks us to hope even when the evidence for hope is thin on the ground.

And yet, people keep loving, using their voices, and imagining a world far braver than the one that shaped them.
In this issue, NaKeesa Frazier-Jennings cuts straight into the tension between strength and softness. Alex Garland wrestles with what millennials inherited, and what carrying it taught them. John Aaron writes unflinchingly through love, memory, and loss. And Tiana Cole names the repeated silencing of Black life, insisting that empathy and courage can still survive it.

Together, their work makes one thing clear: becoming human is unfinished work, always.

It demands we carry grief without letting it consume us. And that we remember: in a fractured season, our stories remain among the sharpest tools we have to remake the world.

Get excited for our upcoming one-of-a-kind book club!
We’re starting a book club to connect community, across prison walls, around local heritage. Thanks to a heritage grant from 4Culture !

How it will work: 1) We’ll send copies of Still True to folks incarcerated in WA DOC 2) We invite them to send us their responses to the book 3) We host 4 in-person meetings in South King County, led by our inside book club members’ responses 4) We collect responses from inside and outside members for a newsletter. Send it to inside members and host it online for free

Still True: The Evolution of an Unexpected Journalist is 10 years of journalistic writing about Seattle, from a 4th-generation Black Feminist Southender: Reagan E J Jackson. We are so excited to have an exchange of local histories through Jackson’s lens!

Get Involved!
Give us the name or DOC number of a loved one you have in WA DOC- we’ll send them a book!

Donate so we can afford to send even more books to folks inside! In payment notes, write "still true books to" (https://f.mtr.cool/qxcbbxxhcf)

A dream became an invitation. That invitation became a movement.

In the latest edition of Speak the Sojourner, Reagan Jackson traces Mixtape Memoir back to its source: a dream that grew into a writing practice built on memory, music, ancestry, and community. This special issue doesn't just tell that story; it hands the mic to the writers themselves, featuring powerful work from this year's Mixtape Memoir participants. Their pieces are a reminder that the stories we carry aren't just ours to keep, but are gifts we leave behind for those who come after us.

Read the latest issue and discover why ordinary lives make for extraordinary stories.
