In a dramatic late-night announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that American and Nigerian forces successfully carried out a high-level joint military operation that killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as ISIS’ global second-in-command. The operation is being called one of the most significant counter-terrorism victories in Africa this year.

Trump revealed the strike was conducted after weeks of intelligence tracking across the Lake Chad Basin, a region long known as a stronghold for extremist groups operating across Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. According to reports, elite Nigerian military units worked alongside U.S. intelligence and technical support teams to locate and eliminate the ISIS commander inside a fortified compound.

Trump’s Statement:

“Abu-Bilal al-Minuki thought he could hide in Africa, but our intelligence knew exactly where he was. He will never terrorize Africa or plan attacks against Americans again.”

He praised the Armed Forces of Nigeria for what he called “extraordinary courage and professionalism” and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strong cooperation.

A fresh Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with at least 65 deaths and around 246 suspected infections reported so far. Health officials say the outbreak is centered in the remote Ituri Province, especially the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones.

What health authorities are saying

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the outbreak after laboratory testing detected Ebola virus samples. Early tests found the virus in 13 out of 20 samples, while at least four deaths have been laboratory-confirmed.

Officials believe this outbreak may involve the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola rather than the more common Zaire strain. That is important because currently approved Ebola vaccines mainly target the Zaire strain, making containment more difficult.
